Autumn Approaches, then Suddenly Leaves

"It’s autumn! A time of hot chocolatey mornings, and toasty marshmallow evenings, and, best of all, leaping into leaves!" A. A. Milne, Winnie-the-Pooh

Autumn was my favorite season when I was a child. I loved the exceptionally warm weather after a hard frost that we used to call "Second Summer." It was, as if, summer held a brief encore. The days were typically followed by much cooler evenings and the settling down of summer crickets made it so much easier to fall asleep at night.

It was during this time of year that my family, like so many others in Northern New Jersey, would make our annual pilgrimage to Tice Farms. Here we purchased a bushel of fresh, crisp apples and a gallon of sweet cider - from a tap no less! It tasted so good with one of their freshly baked cinnamon donuts - the perfect compliment. I can almost smell the aromas now.

But, best of all, the leaves! Every fall they encompass a significant portion of the color spectrum - from yellow to orange to red and violet. And, like A. A. Milne, I would jump into any well heaped up pile of leaves. What great fun! Now, these days, at my age it's probably better for me to just paint and rake them instead.
